Learner Autonomy and Self-Efficacy

In an ELT (English Language Teaching) context, learner autonomy refers to the ability of learners to take control of their own learning process. This means that they are able to set their own goals, decide what they want to learn, how they want to learn it, and monitor their own progress. Learner autonomy encourages learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop the skills necessary to become lifelong learners. Self-efficacy, on the other hand, refers to learners' beliefs in their own abilities to learn and succeed in English language learning. This includes their confidence in their ability to understand and use the language, to learn from their mistakes, and to overcome challenges that arise during the learning process. In an ELT context, promoting learner autonomy and self-efficacy can be achieved through a variety of strategies, such as encouraging learners to set their own learning goals, providing opportunities for self-assessment and reflection, and promoting learner-centered approaches to teaching and learning. When learners have a sense of autonomy and self-efficacy, they are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and successful in their English language learning.
